Permanent Representative Ambassador Mohamed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom participated in the meeting held by the Arab Group at the level of Permanent Representatives on 20/2/2019 under the chairmanship of Lebanon, the President of the League for the month of February, and hosts Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, the High Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Disarmament Affairs.

Ms. Izumi gave a briefing on the Arab decision to hold a conference to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone and other mass destruction in the Middle East, and reviewed the latest activities and meetings with other parties regarding the convening of the conference as well as the establishment of such zone would contribute to strengthening international peace and security at the regional and international levels. She stressed the need to hold the conference regardless of the absence of one or two countries in the first round. She noted that the conference will be held annually until a legally binding agreement is reached to establish the zone. Ms. Izumi also referred to other disarmament-related topics such as the 2020 Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and questions related to cyber security.

On the other hand, the Group hosted the Permanent Representative of Romania, who briefed on his country’s candidacy for the non-permanent membership of the Security Council for the period 2020-2021 and the vision of Romania and its priorities in the Security Council in the event of its membership during the elections to be held in the General Assembly on 7/6/2019, For its presidency of the European Union

Permanent Representative Ambassador Mohamed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom participated in the first meeting of 2019 in the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, in the presence of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres, where Senegal was elected Chairman of the Commission, Afghanistan, Cuba, Indonesia, Namibia and Nicaragua as Vice-Presidents and Malta as Rapporteur, To enable the Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable rights of self-determination without external interference and in national independence and sovereignty.

On 13/2/2019, The Mission of The Republic of Iraq to the United Nations participated in the event of the Friends of Sport for Development and Peace Group at the headquarters of the Mission of Monaco to the United Nations, under the chairmanship of the Permanent Representative of the Mission of Monaco, Ms. Isabelle Picco. The event included the speech of Ms. Mary Powell, Director and Representative of UNESCO in New York, and a satellite video call to a number of specialists in Paris and Geneva, on the UNESCO Plan of Action for Sport in Support of Stability, Development and Peace in the World, the commitment to link sports policy development with the United Nations 2030 Plan and to consider sport as an important political tool to be a sustainable engine of development in line with local and international priorities

The Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations, Ambassador Mohammed Bahr al-Uloom, addressed Iraq’s speech in the Security Council session under the item “the situation in Iraq”. He highlighted the commitment of the political blocs to overcome all obstacles and reach understandings to complete the Cabinet and the continuation of the Iraqi government in its efforts to combat corruption and extremist ideology. 

He also stated that the Government of Iraq is working to overcome the challenges it faces in reconstruction and in a manner that provides sustainable development for future generations and the advancement of the education. He called upon Member States to contribute to the rehabilitation of the archaeological areas destroyed by the organization calling for the terrorist and supporting Iraq in the inclusion of the Babylonian monuments within the list of the world’s human heritage. His Excellency stressed that the brotherly relationship between Iraq and Kuwait strengthens the foundations of peace, security and stability in the region and directs the efforts of these two rich countries to develop and promote sustainable development, which will reflect positive results on both brotherly peoples and the whole region.

Thursday 31/1/2019, The Permanent Mission of Iraq to the United Nations participated in the open dialogue session held by the General assembly of the United Nations with ECOSOC. The session included a detailed explanation of the joint work between the General Assembly and the Council and how to unite efforts to achieve the UN reform project. The President of the General Assembly, Ms. Fernanda Espinosa, and the President of the Economic and Social Council, Ms. King, stated in their speeches that the reform plan on the ground should be implemented through conferences And forums for this year and avoid duplication and repetition in meetings and pursue the right ways to achieve the goals of the United Nations for 2030.

Tuesday 12/2/2019, The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to United Nations met with Mr. Streven Siqueira the Assistant Director of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office. Mr. Siqueira explained the details of his visit to Baghdad and holding a wide workshop at the Headquarter of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad  

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations participated in the art exhibition held at the United Nations Headquarter with participation of a number of diplomatic artists on the theme of Peace and to achieve the goal number 16 of goals of the United Nations goals for 2030, under the title “Art for Peace”, the period of 4 – 8/2/2019.

The participation included contributions made by diplomats-artists of permanent Missions and non-governmental organizations. This is the first participation of Iraq through paintings and works of the second secretary / Dr. Tahani Jamal.
