Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al Uloum, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, met with Ms. Marta Ruedas, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Iraq for Humanitarian and Development Affairs at the Iraqi House in New York on 24/10/2018.

The meeting focused on Iraq’s most important concerns regarding humanitarian affairs, the return of displaced persons and the restoration of stability. The meeting also touched upon the most important development plans that Ms. Marta intends to follow up and implement in Iraq in the coming period.The Permanent Representative stressed that the mission is ready to provide all possible assistance for the success of Ms. Marta Ruedas next mission within the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), as well as Her mission to oversight and coordinate between the offices of the United Nations development agencies in Iraq such as the United Nations Development Program And the UN-Habitat

The delegations of the Ministry of Foreign affairs participated in the discussion of item 65 (Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources), which was held on 24 October 2018 at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

First Secretary, Mr. Imad Mohamed John, delivered the Statement of Iraq, in which he affirmed the right of the Palestinians and the inhabitants of the occupied Golan to their natural resources, land and sovereignty. Furthermore, they have the right to claim compensation for the exploitation, loss, depletion and endangerment of their natural resources in any way because of the illegal measures exercised by the Israeli occupying Power.

Today the global works to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals 2015 – 2030, but this plan is far from the people of Palestine and the occupied Golan, as a result of the practices of the Israeli occupation forces and its destructive role in all aspects of life.

Also, he reiterated Iraq’s firm position in its full support for the rights of the Syrian population in the occupied Golan over their land and resources, as well as the rights of the Palestinian people, in particular their right to establish an independent State with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Delegation of Iraq Participated in the meetings of Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) under item (53) on international Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. In this regard, deputy head of the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, Minister Plenipotentiary Dr. Ali Hilal, addressed the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and the Office for Outer Space Affairs in promoting the safety, security and sustainability of the space environment, and highlighted the need to raise the level of international cooperation and adopt a common vision for the exploration and use of outer space, while stressing the reference of international law and UN Charter in determining international liability for damages caused by space objects, as well as the need for the consent of the Governments of States to submit to the UN and international community with necessary information on their activities in outer space, in accordance with the principle of agreed international principles, transparency and protection. In addition, the shared benefit of outer space shall based on equitable distribution among Member States regardless of their level of economic and scientific development.

Third Secretary Ali Mohammed delivered the statement of the Republic of Iraq to the Third Committee during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on minorities, in which he point s out the measures taken by the Government of the Republic of Iraq to ensure the minorities rights, including the elimination of the negative effects of the policies of the former regime, return of their property and the allocation of lands to build new places of worship, Compensate who was affected by terrorism, and teach their own religious and language ​​in the school.

Also, he stressed that the rights of all minorities in Iraq is a duty that cannot be ignored. It is one of the national and humanitarian duties of an important segment of the Iraqi people because they suffered as the majority of Iraqis suffered from the scourge of war and terrorism.

 First Secretary, Yasser Abdul Aziz Mohammed, delivered the intervention of the Republic of Iraq to the Third Committee during the interactive dialogue with the Chairperson of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Committee and the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, In which he referred to the discrimination and obstacles that a large group of persons with disabilities are facing through integrating into the general education system, opportunities of employment justice and in the selection of medical treatment.

Also, he stressed on the keenness of the Republic of Iraq on the principle of non-discrimination towards persons with disabilities through the accession of Iraq to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2013, and the establishment of the Authority for the care of persons with disabilities and special needs, that aims to achieving care for this segment of society and eliminate discrimination against them, secure a decent life for them, to create jobs for them in the State departments in all sectors and to spread a culture of respect for disability as part of human diversity and human nature.
