Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq, Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, met with the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations and Head of UNAMI Mission in Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert, at the United Nations headquarters in New York. the activities of UNAMI mission during the last three months were reviewed , the challenges in the region and their impact on Iraq, as well as the areas to focus on in the up-coming period.

The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, represented by the Second Secretary Dr. Tahani Jamal, participated in the Fourth Forum of Science, Technology and Innovation of 2019 of the Economic and Social Council.

The Forum addressed the need for joint international action to benefit from science and technology, and provided opportunities for innovation, strengthening partnerships, activating the role of youth and women, and addressing innovations and scientific strategies that promotes the implementation of sustainable development goals for 2030.

The Permanent Representative welcomed the launch of the United Nations Program to Prevent the Travel of Terrorists, in his speech at the high-level event launching the program, which contributes to reducing the threat of terrorist intimidation and the development of counter-terrorism measures. Iraq is one of the first countries to apply to the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Bureau to get the United Nations Program to Prevent the Travel of Terrorists.

He also thanked the United Nations, in particular the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Bureau and the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate, for their unwavering support for Iraq in all areas, as part of the efforts to combat terrorism, and the war against DAESH that enabled Iraq to liberate all the territories and achieve victory on 10 December 2017.

Counselor Sarmad Mowaffak Mohamed delivered the statement of Iraq before the Third Preparatory Committee of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Review Conference 2020 under the Nuclear Disarmament, the statement expressed Iraq’s concern about the continued possession by the nuclear-weapon States of a large number of nuclear arsenal, about fifteen thousand nuclear weapons, in which it poses a great danger to both the human and the environment, despite the passage of nearly twenty-five years The indefinite extension of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The statement called on those countries to act seriously and urgently to eliminate these nuclear arsenals, because the total elimination of these weapons is the only guarantee not to use or threaten the use of nuclear weapons, to reach the ultimate goal of a world free of these devastating destructive weapons because of the disastrous effects pose A real threat to human existence on this planet.
